SUPERVISION AS AN EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT FUNCTION FOR INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY

A CASE STUDY OF PATERSON ZOCHONIS

 INDUSTRIES (PZ) ABA

ABSTRACT

 

          This research work “Supervision as one effective management function for an increased productivity using Paterson Zochonis Aba (Pz Industries). This research is aimed at identifying the varied supervisory behaviour and their impact on subordinates and organizational productivity.

          In other that the validity of the stated objectives is achieved, three hypothesis was formulated, secondary data were from books, journal, and conference papers in relevant areas as well as existing internal records.

          Primary data was obtained through personal interview and questionnaires administered to the supervisors and their subordinates or ordinary workers of Paterson Zochonis Industries Aba which served as the population.

          Percentage representation in tabular form was used to determined the sample percentage population studied. Simple percentage technique with response to questionnaire was used or employed in analyzing the data and testing of hypothesis formulated.

THE FINDINGS INCLUDE AMONG OTHERS

          The behaviour patterns of supervisors of Paterson Zochonis industries could attributed to the polices of the chairman and chief executives of the company under which the work, for instance the absence of workers union in PZ industries. 

          Employee productivity increases where supervisors as well as management of an organization is interested in the welfare, security and proper work accomplishment of subordinates.

          The need for local sourcing of raw materials is imperative since it will reduce cost of importation for management and increase production capacity and ploughed back profit as well as workers wages. The correction consistently of the initial mistakes made by the pioneer leaders of our (Nigeria) economic system which has resulted often, times in instability of government and government laws affecting business and organization in the country.

          That in the business world, most business set up appear feeble as a result of financial incapacitation, lack of necessary leadership tools in terms of training and qualification of supervisors and insubordination by the ordinary workers.

          The need for government involvement in business management by ensuring that there is a law compelling every business to enhance his workers welfare and equitable remuneration for all workers.

              Enhancing good communication net work between the department in an organization ensure or promotes qualitative supervision and achievement of the organization basic objectives.

          That supervisors must not see giving orders or command as their major responsibility  instead it should be one of the numerous responsibilities a supervisor must perform to help the organization maximize profit, reach out to target market in desired quantity and quality with its products.

          To ensure effective supervision in an organization, management should measure supervision in day-to-day activity of the organization. That workers cannot work effectively under their supervisors without effective under their supervisors without effective communication because the wood with which any business survive is proper communication.

          In conclusion since effective supervision as a business function affects the productivity of an organization positively, effort must be made by all business organization in Nigeria to ascertain adequate and effective supervision.

          This will not only increase output or size of business, its profit, standard or reputation and total contribution to the building of the nation’s economy.

1.1            BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Organizations in most countries including Nigeria now appear to have been overtaken by increasing leadership turbulence and unpredicted financial liableness which this far haws forced business analysis to doubt the positively of the organization productivity. It is generally accepted that the character of supervision in business organization in any country has an important role to play in the grower of the organization. This becomes all the more crucial during a reversionary period when resources are limited and the majority of the organization have an up will task meeting adequately the expectation of their employees in terms of financial benefits.

The list of the area where government interventions are exercises is long and continues favour of economic recovery which internal has led to the reduction in the foreign exchange available to business organization for the importation of most needed raw materials.
