MARKETING PROBLEMS OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT IN NIGERIA

(A CASE STUDY OF NJIKOKA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ANAMBRA STATE)

ABSTRACT

 

This study was conducted to determine some baseline data essential for the improvement of poor marketing facilities.

          The population for this study was drawn from the towns in Njikoka Local Government Area.  These towns are Nimo, Nofia, Abagana, Enugwukwu, Enugu Agidi this was done to get the considered include the assessment of the nature of road network the storage facilities, assessment of the knowledge of price system in marketing of their product and finding their level of education.

The information of this work was collected from the questionnaire distributed to the study group the return was used in data analysis.

          Result obtained after analysis of data revealed that the marketing of agricultural is faced with multifarious marketing problems.

1.0            INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF STUDY

          Agriculture is as old as the history of man.  The history of the development of marketing process is also as old as the division process of labour and the consequent need to indulge in exchange of production between one man and another in the olden day agricultural out put were marketed by barter method.  But at time went on coins, cowries etc were introduced and used as medium of exchange putting aside the clumsy trade of batter.

          Not long paper money was introduced producer had to travel long distance to make sales communication was through path roads with the coming of the Europeans in Nigerian the economy saw a new life.  Both agricultural and industrial produce were encouraged through the emphasis was move on export corps.  They set up trading companies and making boards to monitor the activities industrial and agricultural sector.  All of them were introduced in export corps.  For more improvement in social of agricultural products as soon as the country got independence the countries rules took the road to our colonial masters towards agricultural.  But after the way agricultural was neglected people instead of taking farming as a profession they find of old job all might for people in the urban area not they moved to urban areas while collar jobs new here have been a regulation in agriculture in which the civil government is now encouraging people back to farming.

          A case study of Njikoka local government area faced with many problem like bad roads, epileptic pricing policy high level of illiteracy inadequate storage facilities. Because of all these problem the cost of transport fare is costly and the farmers markets their goods by bargain because of price of fluaction in agricultural products.

          No standard pricing system many of their farmers are illiterate and they don’t have agricultural knowledge because of the economic situation the problem is that demand for food is more then supply and some to poor storage facilities some of their farmers produces decay due to poor storage facilities.

          Their women carry they product on their head from farm to market because they don’t have assess road from their farm to market given through the supply of agricultural products and not allow level some communities who would have alleviated a bit of the problem encounter difficulties in marketing of their farm produce items and other thing to market effectively.
